Why do people think the Libertarian Party is so strong now?
I keep seeing posts about how the Libertarian Party is going to take over.
They BARELY managed to get 1% of the vote in 2012, with a well-known candidate. I'd agree the LP is growing, and fewer people identify as Republican or Democrat, but they still vote Republican and Democrat. We're still a LONG way off from having a third party candidate with a valid shot of winning the Presidency. At best, they might be able to spoil an election in their home state for one party or the other. But even that is a longshot.

The Libertarian Party always appears to gather support whenever there is strong dislike for the party in power.... mainly because a good segment of those opposed do not want to be associated with the other party.
During the Reagan & Bush 1.0 years, many people claimed to be Libertarian because they did not want to be associated with Jimmy Carter.
During the Clinton Years many claimed to be Libertarian because they did not want to be associated with Gingrich & crew.
During the Bush 2.0 years, many claimed to be Libertarians because they a) opposed the war (which BOTH parties supported...despite the short memories of some kids here).. or b) did not want to be associated with the Pelosi opposition.
In short, there's a reason why the winners of most of the last several Presidential elections have positioned themselves as "Outsiders"... a good chunk of centrist voters are sick of the corrupted DC establishment. But they'll still more often than not vote Major Party come November...

Libertarianism is growing but it still seems to have one foot in the main stream parties.
