What are coil packs and what.....?
Maybe a dumb question, but on a LS1 motor, what is their primary function and are they expensive to replace?
I'm sorry for not adding details. It's a 5.7, and there are how many of these coil packs?
8? One per cylinder?

Coil packs are step up transformers that increase the cars 12 volts to the 35,000 volts needed to fire a spark plug. They cost $50 or less for most cars.

As you can see their is one coil per cylinder attached on the valve cover with a short "pig-tail" ignition wire to the spark plug. Each individual ignition coil is able to saturate more fully with electrical currant to fire the spark plugs.
The crankshaft position sensor sends TIMED electrical current to the individual ignition coils to fire the spark plugs.
Go to rockauto.com to see what the average price is for a Delphi or AC-Delco individual ignition coil for an LS1 As we remember they cost from $55.00 - $60.00 each

Coil packs replace the distributor. They can fire individually and for longer/shorter if required. Depending on the model/engine size they can get quite expensive but normally not too bad price wise.
