Is anyone here familiar with learning Alexander Technique for singing?

It seems obscure. My teacher is training me through this method, and I like it very much. Still, I noticed that it runs against popular beliefs about singing, and it makes me feel a little odd. Did/does your teacher use this method?

    Hi Krystal,

My name is Morgan and I am a Nationally Certified Alexander Technique teacher (atcenterstudio.com). The Alexander Technique is over 100 years old and has amazing benefits for performers—I am happy to hear you are enjoying it!

I am curious if your teacher who is 'training you through this method' is a certified teacher as well, or a voice teacher influenced by his/her own experience with the Alexander Technique? This could make a difference in your learning.

Regardless, I would not be concerned with the fact that what you are learning 'runs against popular beliefs about singing'. There are many professional performers (singers, actors, dancers, etc.) who have study—and used—this Technique to continue performing at their best in what many consider very successful careers.

The Alexander Technique is just that: a Technique. It is a skill that individuals can learn and then apply to different activities in their daily life; giving people more choices about how they respond to stimuli. You can always go back to singing the way others continue to preach is the 'popular' way, or you could continue to explore using your voice in a different way (via the Alexander Technique) that potentially can be more freeing, easeful, and sustainable on your vocal chords.

    Best of luck!

I teach the Alexander technique in Melbourne, Australia & I have some articles on my web-site which relates to the application of this technique to voice and singing http://www.alexanderschool.edu.au/the-alexander-te...

You may find it useful to have lessons with a fully trained Alexander teacher in addition to your voice teacher. Here is a page of links which should help you locate someone in your area http://www.alexanderschool.edu.au/the-alexander-te...
