Weather is said to hurt the general economy. Your opinion?

I kind of feel that restaurant type operations are hurt severely. Think that we can all agree that you can not eat the meal tomorrow that you planned for today. Just wonder if most business categories are; likewise, hurt. Would really like your opinion.

Weather influences every aspect of a business. For the restaurant industry, weather influences the availability of certain ingredients for meals, accessibility to the restaurant and even what prices are charged to cover insurance costs. Most other industries are much the same, with raw materials accessibility, accessibility to locations and price all being affected by weather. And this also has a huge impact on the ability of a business to generate revenue.

If this was just a 1 or 2 day thing, sure, the impact would be negligible.

But many areas in the country have been hit by numerous heavy storms that have shut everything down for days each time. If you consider that each storm basically shuts everything down for a day or two, and then consider some areas have been hit by 5 and 6 such storms so far, those one or two days start to add up to two or three weeks. So yeah, that's going to leave a dent in the economy.

And this winter isn't over yet...

Source(s): @David - the storms here have basically shut down half the country for days at a time. Just the airline industry alone has lost millions in revenue due to the fact they've been cancelling thousands of flights...a day...because of bad conditions.

Of course you are meaning the American economy, odd as we in the UK have had terrible floods but I have not heard ours has harmed our general economy. I feel fairly sure the same will apply to you. Of course it can and does harm people and local economies, but we are both too big a national economy to do any long term harm.

Yes, very much. Beside repairing the damage, economic activities failed to operate over the bad weather.

    Luke 17

26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days of the Son of man.

27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, and gave in marriage unto the day that Noah went into the Ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

Geez, you dont have to be a rocket scientist to come to that same conclusion. Bad weather means there are bad roads Bad roads means that there will be less movement of goods.

    which means more expensive commodities

all in all, bad weather is bad for the economy
