What are the must have wine glasses?

Lets say I invite friends for dinner and they bring a bottle of something that I have never heard of. They say it is a dessert wine or cognac or it is wonderful over vanilla ice cream. I don't know my way around this stuff and I just want to be prepared. If the 2 sizes of stemmed glasses are all i need that is fine too. I don't want to only get by with what I have if there is anything proper I should have on hand.

A respectable arsenal of stemware includes four glasses: a general-purpose white wine glass, two types of red wine glasses (commonly called Bordeaux and Burgundy) and a champagne flute. The white wine glass is small, in order to prevent the rapid warming that would occur in a vessel with more surface area. The Bordeaux glass (which is also appropriate for other hearty red wines, like cabernet and merlot) is larger, which allows for more development of the bouquet. The most notable feature of the champagne flute is that it's tall, to allow the proper development of bubbles

The other two answers are pretty accurate for the proper glasses. I'll tell you that we got tired of breaking stemware drinking wine on a daily basis - I mean watching TV and knocking it over and stuff. Not a lot of glasses but one or two a year, maybe. I have these glasses that are about 6 ounces, I guess, and shaped like a tulip bulb, in general. Almost like a brandy snifter without a foot. Nice glasses for general purpose. We use them for wine, they're great for whiskey, whisky or cognac and they'd be perfect for ice cream. I'm not suggesting you should dump the stemware for company, just that these are real useful glasses for a lot of things. See the link:

There is a lot of unnecessary wine paralphenallia available. Usually basic wine glass or as mentioned two different sizes will suffice for most uses. IF YOU've a dessert wine,as noted theist should be served after dinner or if you've a fine liquor such. As Chambord you can serve it as a sauce officer cream. Or drink it. There are many liquors that may be served .over ice cream. Consult your local liquor store for more info.
