Is it normal for my bike exhaust to throw out flames after revving?
I bought an old school carburated zx6 (zx600j). Is it normal to shoot out flames out the back? It does not pop, but it could be backfire. Idk if its some kind of carburator/intake problem. Everybody thinks its cool, but I think it wasnt tuned properly or something. It came w/ an aftermarket D&D exhaust which is extremely loud. It spits fire w/ and w/out the slip on pipe.
Should I get it re-jetted and dyno tuned?

Flames coming out of the exhaust pipe are an indication of an overly rich fuel mixture from the carburetor. The flames are from unburned fuel that didn't get used up in the cylinder(s). If you pull the spark plugs, they will be all black and covered with soot. Your bike is not only wasting fuel, but probably not performing up to its potential either. Get the carbs rebuilt and a dyno-tune couldn't hurt.

Sounds like a combo of problems that will eventually burn up the engine.
Very good chance that one or more of the carbs has the float set improperly leaking in extra fuel, one or more of the intake valves is improperly set to let that extra fuel into the cylinder(s).
And to top it off the timing appears to be retarded.

I'd get the carbs cleaned and adjusted properly before going to the re-jetting stage.
