Really wasn't a technical problem ... though the design was fraught with challenges, especially regarding the safety of the crew in the event of a critical part failure during launch.
It was old, it was expensive to maintain and launch and it did not allow for transportation beyond Earth orbit ... those were the reasons for canceling the program.

The technical problem with those specific shuttles was age. They'd gone past they're expected useful life quite nicely, but like anything that moves, they got more expensive to maintain.
