It certainly looks like it is going downhill fast. However this is 'Not' Syria, I the EU cant sit on its hands and do nothing. The Ukraine is in Europe with Northern Ukraine Ethnic Russian and the Larger South Ukrainian. The Problem is that the EU may have to act Militarily in the future as It did in Kosovo, herein lies the Dilemna the EU-NATO would not dare intervene because of Russian Military strength or a Russian retaliation. I am afraid this will be another Syria with the same hypocrisy by the West. In my opinion the Ukraine does not need a union with either Russia or the EU. The only answer to any kind of federalism is Nationalism.

I learned that about 70% of the population of the Ukraine are Ukrainian with Russians being the next biggest group at 17%. I don't think most Ukrainians want close ties with Russia but prefer close ties to Europe. Because of this if Putin backs the Ukrainian President in the use of military forces to take back control of the country, he could be biting off more then he can chew. We know that a Democratic American President will not lift a single finger to help the Ukrainians but a Republican American President could easily start sending in war materials to the rebels if a civil war breaks out in the Ukraine. This could tie up Putin and his Ukrainian allies for a long time and cost them a lot of money.

Thankfully, the latest agreement may stop this happening. However, consider this, not very long ago, a certain Party leader in the UK said in the EU Parliament, that their tinkering with Nations, or offering direct deals opposed to long term partnerships could lead to violence on a terrible scale.

Russia has no intention of letting go of Ukraine. Half the population in Ukraine have seen what similar Nations as themselves from previously heavily communist control are getting out of membership of the EU as against what they get from Russia.

It is a recipe for disaster. The EU is becoming less afraid to get involved in Nation states, and worse, offering great temptations to those in those states who feel that anything will be better than what they have.

The EU is trying to become a Federal state, a United States of Europe and it scares me. I want out of this growing monster before it sets off even more potential civil wars.

It was predicted, it is happening.

The process will start very shortly after the Olympic flame is extinguished. Putin will step in then and make sure the pro-Russia side prevails. He will laugh at Obama's idle threats.
