How do I write this properly?

I'm writing an essay about the Odyssey and I want to say that Odysseus felt a lot of pride after he escapes from the Cyclops. I want to say something along the lines of "he was hit with an excessive amount of pride" or "surge of pride", but I don't know if it's written correctly because it sounds weird. Please help? :)

What I usually do is instead of using a complex sentence to convey and abstract or complex thought. I use a simple sentence to establish the thought and then use more sentences around it to elaborate. Also instead of trying to use more complex adjectives and sentence structure try to employ rhetorical techniques in your paper or essays.
