Jesus Christ was very clear when he said that no one should be called father but the Father?

So why do Catholics believe they can call their priests that?

(Matthew 23:8-10) But YOU, do not YOU be called Rabbi, for one is YOUR teacher, whereas all YOU are brothers. 9 Moreover, do not call anyone YOUR father on earth, for one is YOUR Father, the heavenly One. 10 Neither be called ‘leaders,’ for YOUR Leader is one, the Christ.

Update:

If you'd read what was written, you'd see I asked about calling priests that, not your daddy.

No where in the Hebrew language does Rabbi mean master: its meaning: my great one, my honourable sir, a title used by the Jews to address their teachers (and also honour them when not addressing them)

patēr(Father) Outline of Biblical Usage generator or male God is called the Father

(of the stars, the heavenly luminaries, because he is their creator, upholder, ruler)

(of all rational and intelligent beings, whether angels or men, because he is their creator, preserver, guardian and protector)

(of spiritual beings and of all men)

(of Christians, as those who through Christ have been exalted to a specially close and intimate relationship with God, and who no longer dread him as a stern judge of sinners, but revere him as their reconciled and loving Father)

(the Father of Jesus Christ, as one whom God has united to himself in the closest bond of love and intimacy, made acquainted with his purposes, appointed to explain and carry out among men the plan of salvation, and made to share also in his own divine nature)

(Called Father by Jesus Christ himself)

    (Called Father by the apostles)

The Catholics are "wrong" when they call their priest Father, this should not surprise anyone, the Catholics are "wrong in many things" their idol worshipers(cross, Mary, saints, rabbits, eggs), creature worshipers( priest, saints, Mary) Believe in paganism (the sun God Tammuz whose symbol is the cross, Easter- Queen of heaven, Tammuz's mother, her symbol is the rabbit she is know as the goddess of fertility who forbid her priest to marry! The Catholic religion is the complete opposite of what the Bible says, 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 explains why (3 If, now, the good news we declare is in fact veiled, it is veiled among those who are perishing, 4 among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.)

Calling their priest Father is only one of their pagan adulterated teachings, this is why in scripture false religion is called an empire the mother of harlots(prostitutes) Babylon the Great and at Rev 18:4 "all" are advised to "get out" of her or share in her destruction!

The clergy class usually want to be called something other than Brother. As a photographer for over 60 years, I have done weddings in most of the churches in Christendom and some other religions too.

Most of the clergy in those churches are called by a a title, like, Father, Reverend, Pastor, Right Reverend, The Most Reverend, Rabbi, etc. As we can see by the scriptures, none of them really go by the Bible.

Also, many of them try to put themselves above the members of the church by the robes many wear. Does anyone think Jesus acted that way. If he did, the gang that Judas led to the garden would not have had any trouble knowing who he was and Judas would not have had to point him out for them.

A TRUE Christian minister would follow Christ and his teachings. A true Christian minister would not accept money for his preaching work.

You are correct, Jehovah God is our heavenly father and Jesus Christ is his only begotten son, our savior who died for our sins. Not only mine, but for the whole world.

This being said, Catholics are blind to the fact, that they should not call any man father. Many Catholics have begun to read the Bible but still believe trinity doctrine and celebrate the pagan holidays, and fear hell fire; but the really sad thing is they have taken Jehovah's name out of their Bibles. He he is the most high over the earth, not the pope.

Tradition dictates they can usurp scripture at their liking.

See the Creeds they have compiled.

None of what they state is built on scripture.

True Christians follow the Bible as guide and listen to Christ.

Because Catholics read the entire Bible in context instead of taking a few verses out of context and ignoring everything else.

A few questions about your personal opinion on what Jesus is saying in Matt. 23:8-10:

    * If Jesus was being literal about not calling people father, why did Stephen refers to "our father Abraham," in Acts 7:2 or why did Paul speaks of "our father Isaac" in Romans 9:10?

    * What exactly did Paul mean when he said "I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. FOR I BECAME YOUR FATHER IN CHRIST JESUS THROUGH THE GOSPEL" (1 Cor. 4:14–15).?

    * Why did the apostles’ refer to members of their flock as "my son" or "my child" and imply spiritual fatherhood (cf. Gal. 4:19; 1 Tim. 1:18; 2 Tim. 2:1; Philem. 10; 1 Pet. 5:13; 1 John 2:1; 3 John 4).?

    * You realize you're reading an English translation, right? The words your Bible translates as "rabbi" (teacher) and "leader" (master) are the basis of words like Mr., Mrs., Dr.. Why do you have problems with Fr. but not with the other titles?

The problem isn't with Catholics calling priests "father". We do that to honor the gift of spiritual fatherhood that the Bible clearly teaches (as I showed in the above verses). The problem is that you're imposing a too literal interpretation of Christ's message, so you missing the true meaning of what the Holy Spirit it trying to share with you.

Jesus is not preaching against the title "father.". He is criticizing Jewish leaders who love "the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the market places, and being called ‘rabbi’ by men" (Matt. 23:6–7). It's an exaggeration - Jesus is not saying it's wrong to call people "father" who are really fathers (either biologically or spiritually). He's saying that the scribes and Pharisees how sinful and proud they were for not looking humbly to God as the source of all authority and fatherhood and teaching, and instead setting themselves up as the ultimate authorities, father figures, and teachers. Catholics that God is our supreme protector, provider, and instructor and it's wrong to view any individual other than God as having these roles. That's not what Catholics mean when they refer to priests as "father". I said, they're recognizing the gift of spiritual fatherhood that Christ left us through the apostles and their successors.

Not to mention their biological dads.

Hmm... what a quandry for Christians.

Except : If you are right you must be wrong !!! Because the Commandment is Honor your Father...Does God ask you to do what is sinful.

Because Catholics are not literalists or legalists, and we don't take scripture out of context.

It amazes me when so many anti-Catholics accuse us of disregarding Matthew 23:9 but then turn around and completely disregard Matthew 23:8 and 10.

Matthew 23:8 "But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren."

Rabbi translates as "teacher" or "doctor" but I am sure you go around calling treachers "teachers" and doctors "doctors."

Matthew 23:10: "Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ."

Master can translate to any kind of leader including political leaders, military leaders, or spiritual leaders (like any pastor).

As you so politely point out, in context, Matthew 23:1-11 reads: "Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ."

This is a call for humility for all in leadership roles. It is not to be taken literally. We are not to deny our male parent and cut the Commandment to honor our father and mother in half. We should still respect our local, regional, and national leaders.

Some leaders in any church may fall into the same folly of a lack of humility as the pharisees of Jesus' day.

By the way, we also take into account the entirety of the Bible:

    The Apostle Paul writes:

I am writing you this not to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. Even if you should have countless guides to Christ, yet you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. (1 Corinthians 4:14-15)

    And:

As you know, we treated each one of you as a father treats his children, exhorting and encouraging you and insisting that you conduct yourselves as worthy of the God who calls you into his kingdom and glory. (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12)

    And:

I urge you on behalf of my child Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment, who was once useless to you but is now useful to (both) you and me. (Philemon 10-11)

And finally, Peter calls himself the "father" of Mark:

The chosen one at Babylon sends you greeting, as does Mark, my son. (1 Peter 5:13)

    With love in Christ.
