Is it still possible to drive my freelander?
hi all,
I have a 1998 Landrover Freelander 2.0 TD. it starts and runs fine but wont drive in any gear 1st-5th and reverse...nothing. it lets me select the gears and the speedo works as if im movin' but im not. it also makes a grinding noise when clutch is not in and the sound is coming from the ird where the output shaft comes out for the rear wheels. is it possible to make it 2wd and still drive it or do I have to spend big bucks on it straight up... thanks- Trav

If it's a clutch/transmission issue. then making it 2WD won't make a difference, as you would still need a working clutch or transmission (whichever the problem is) in order for the vehicle to move.

if you can roll underneath, theres 2 rods coming from below the gearstick to the gearbox. one is the selector rod and the other is a stabiliser. at each end of the selector rod is a small roll pin (connecting to gearstick and gearbox). these can become loose through wear and tear.
id check these first. if theyre ok, id remove the one closest to the gearbox and see if the boxes selector moves properly. it should feel tight as you move it around. if it wont move or you can push it around with one finger, then its time to get the gearbox dropped. it could be something as minor as a release fork or slave cylinder to a complete transmission
