It's misleading and a terrible caricature of the message of Christ. Hell is a reality just as death is. The gospel of Christ is that He came to save us from it. God sent His Son to save us from it. We don't have to go to Hell though we all deserve it.

Christianity has been a huge factor in improving the lives of women just as Ancient Israel's Mosaic laws improved their lives when you compare Israel's laws with the laws of their contemporaries.

Best thing I've ever seen from Christopher Hitchens. About the only thing from him, as far as I can remember, with which I agree at all. That's a pleasant discovery!
He probably had the idea, however, that Christianity necessarily involves those particular notions. And there, he was mistaken. I was raised in a missionary family, and at no time was either the terror or hell or any notion of inferiority of women part of what I was taught.
One does learn, as one matures, to separate the real Christian gospel from the material people throw in for their own pleasure or convenience. Quite a few good Christian writers in the 20th century were very helpful at pointing out the difference.
