Can I Shoots 1500 Meter ELKS With This Gun ? Pleez HELP !!!?
( sorry, couldn't resist ) Got my new toy a couple of weeks ago and the stock from Boyd's, yesterday. BTW, Canucks, Boyd's will now ship to Canada at the new $500 limit....sweet. I was thinking of the Night Train models but my gun-store owning buddy said, just trade in my 597 HB / mags and pick up this Savage 11 in 308. Yes, said I. I kept the scope, 'pod and sling, paid $99 for the stock and $200 difference for the gun. Now to go and sight it in ...when the temps moderate a touch. One reason I picked this up was because a lot of people here have recommended it, so I did some research. Thanks, guys.

Good choice. Let us know how it shoots when you've sighted it in.
And of course, pics of the targets or it didn't happen.

1500 meters is very far for even shooting 6'x6' piece of paper with any 308 Winchester. Hunting with it would be out of the question, especially a large animal like an Elk. I ran numbers out to 1650 yards (~1509 meters), a 165 accubond bullet leaving the muzzle at about 2650 fps with B.C. of .475 which is pretty optimistic for a 22" barrel, would be at 1,000 fpe at 600 yards (550 meters). That is considered the minimum energy to cleanly take that type of animal and honestly a lot can go wrong at that distance. Misjudging the wind by 5 mph will allow the bullet to carry 16 inches at that distance. At 1509 meters the numbers become rather ridiculous and the bullet will go transonic somewhere around 1000 meters depending on conditions. At 1509 velocity will be around 885 fps, it will have about the same energy as a 380 +P at the muzzle, it will have dropped 1838 inches and drifted 318 inches for a 10 mph crosswind.
If you have any aspirations of shooting an animal past 600 meters, I would say you need to step up to the 300 RUM or 30-378 Weatherby and shoot a 210 Accubond LR bullet trying to get an accurate load and close to 3,000 fps at the muzzle. At least that bullet will reach 1509 meters without going transonic (still going 1291 fps with 778 fpe), but with 910 inches of drop and 158 inches of drift. Still a far better option than a 308. Take the 308 to the range, about the time your group gets bigger than 6" from kneeling/prone or whatever position you will likely be shooting at Elk in, you have reached your max range. If I were a betting man, it will be before you get to 400 meters and likely closer to 200 or 300.
Source(s): If you decide to shoot that far, save you money for a better scope with repeatable adjustments and a base with at least 20 MOA of additional elevation, probably 40 MOA. - 6 years ago
First off go back to school and we take English because what ever you're say isn't comprehendible .
