Rescuing a Dog, Help?
I am most likely going to rescue a dog from the local domestic animal shelter.
This dog caught my eye, but his info says 'red golden retriever'. This is obviously not a red golden, and I cannot exactly tell what type of dog this is. He looks a mix, but I'm not sure.
What breed do you think he is? Do you know anything about this breed and how they are?
Have you rescued a dog before and how was it?
Thank you in advance.

Nice looking Mutt.. I have one of those myself. Often on a mixed breed, one breed will stand out more than others. With my young dog, nothing stands out.
I would guess there is a little shepherd in this dog. If he was an owner rescue, they could have known a parent was a Golden.
Most shelters can only guess at the breed, sometimes they are close, others they are way off.

Very generic-looking mongrel there. He has more than two breeds in him, almost certainly. Something gundog + something hound + something pittie would be my guess, but with that shorter coat, sable-with-mask coloring, a mostly-drop ears that could be a lot of different gundogs, a dozen different hounds, and almost any member of the mastiff family.
The dog is old enough that he should be assessed on his own merits and not on a wild guess (and any guess would be wild) about his pedigree. There are several great, informal tests out there for adult shelter dogs to get an idea of things like drive and handler responsiveness, when you go to meet him, be prepared to do one or two of them to get an idea of his temperament.
And my avatar is the latest of many rescues in my life and he is a rockin' awesome dog. He took some work and he has some issues (health, fully disclosed by the rescue before I took him) but he is a wonderful dog.

That's definitely not a red golden retriever.
He looks like a mix, to me. I wouldn't worry about it to much. Mix-breed dogs tend to be healthier than purebred dogs :)
I can tell you right now that rescuing an animal is one of the most rewarding experiences. It is not only giving an abandoned animal a chance at having a good home, it is also saving their life. My hat is off to you for choosing to adopt.
We once rescued a lovely Pointer mix. We named her Gypsy. :)
