It would have been self destruction if they went to war against the soviet Union. ICBMs were targeted for the NNATO main cities as well as the Warsaw pact cities.
Today it is Russia not the Soviet Union. So your assumption needs modifying.

There will be no war. There is really nothing USA or EU or U.N. can do to Russia.
