How do I convince my mom that rubbing Dog's face in poop/pee is bad?
We just got a new puppy, and she insists that rubbing her nose in it, smacking her and then throwing her outside is an age old trick that has worked for years, but I know that all it does is traumatize the poor animal. I've tried telling her this, but she's the kind of person who gets very irate if you even allude to the possibility that they are wrong about something. How do I convince her that this is a harmful practice?
@myfavouritelucy Actually I do have the time, and I walk her 8+ times a day to minimize her accidents (though I have yet to successfully get her to go #2 outside) , but I can't control what she does when it's my mom's turn to watch her as I do my chores and stuff. My mom's physically disabled, so she can't follow her around like I can, and that also means that I have to do all the chores by myself. Personally, I think the puppy would've been better off in the care of someone else, but my mom really wants her, and it's not like she'd respect my opinion on the matter.

Your mother doesn't sound like the sort of person you can reason with, so I would keep her away from this puppy as much as possible. In any case, if you were taking this puppy out as much as is needed, it wouldn't be pooping in the house, so you are at fault here too. You should be watching this puppy closely, so that as soon as it looks like its going to pee or poo, pick it up, take it outside, and then praise it for doing it outside. And if you make a comment about not having the time I will scream

Educate by example is about all I can suggest here, other than taking the puppy out of her hands, and straight back to where it came from before it's totally traumatised. Clearly your mum is living in the Dark Ages!! Pretty soon this poor puppy is going to either be a nervous wreck, or attack. Could go either way unless something is done to get through to her that this is NOT how you house-train a dog.

This does nothing except create stress and fear.
Dogs can not relate a past crime to a current punishment - you have to catch the dog in the act, say no and take them outside and then praise them.
Shoving their nose in their waste possibly hours after thye have done it means nothing - the dog doesn't associate the punishment with going to the toilet 3 hours ago. They'll associate it with whatever they were doing - if the dog was just laying near your feet and then gets punished for the accident he learns that laying by your feet = punishment.

I bring my pup to the poop or pee and say no, but I don't rub her nose in it. Your mom sounds like my mom. What I have done in the past is print out an article explaining the consequences behind it.
Puppy and dog hate getting their nose shoved in their own pee and poop, they see it as one of two ways;
1. They see it as abuse, getting thrown around and being forced to have their face in something they don't want.
2. They see it as an opportunity to learn to eat their own poop.
To extend on what I do, is when she pees or poop, I bring her to it (without touching her just words). Then once were close I hold her collar (not in a harsh way, just to make sure she stays. She's already be where I'm holding her). Then I point and say "no". Then put her outside so they get the hint outside is where they have to go.
Doesn't sound helpful, I was skeptical at first but my pup has come a LONG way!

Wait...what? How does this help, exactly? There are many other ways to train an animal. You should show her videos of Caesar Milan for example, and in the time being take the puppy and keep it away from her.

Tell her another way to train the puppy. Your right its not a good way to train a dog at all. Suggest some of Doctor Sophia Yin's methods since hers are fast and easy if you do them right

Explain to her that that practice is from before we understood dogs like we do now.
Use this example:
You are living with people who do not speak your language at all, and they do not speak yours. You go to do something perfectly normal. And suddenly they are there, shouting at you in their language, hitting you, and throwing you outside. You don't know what you did wrong.
Or worse, you did something a few minutes ago, and now you are just sitting down. They come and start shouting at you for that thing you did a few minutes ago. But since you can't understand them, you don't realize they are angry for that other thing.
Now see it from the dog's point of view.
The dog has not learned that outside is where they eliminate. So they will eliminate when they need to. Suddenly they are being shoved back into their own waste, spanked, and put outside.
There is no positive part of this. Nothing explaining to the dog that outside is good. The dog just thinks your mother is crazy and it has something to do with poop.
"Maybe I'm supposed to eat the poop?"
"Why does she hit me?"
"I don't like her, she's scary."
The proper way to train a dog is to reinforce the good behavior and redirect the bad.
Dog tries pooping inside = dog is taken outside.
dog poops outside = dog is praised for doing the right thing. outside = good.
poop is found = poop is cleaned up. Dog is not involved because dog would not connect the punishment to the ACT of pooping. Just to the poop itself.
What your mother does:
Dog poops inside = dog is punished and put outside. Outside is bad and lonely.
Dog pooped a few minutes ago = dog's face shoved in poop and spanked. Human scary. Human = pain and fear.
Crate the puppy or contain her to the room your mother is in when you are unavailable. Keep her on a leash when she's with your mother, that way if she goes to squat, your mother can give it a tug and then take her outside to finish.

Next time she does it, drag her into the bathroom and shove her face down in the toilet. Make sure it hasn't been flushed all day.
