Atheists: If morality just evolved isnt it equal to evil which also just evoloved?

Do you have any arguments for someone who wants to be evil to convince them not to?

I'm not talking about in a case where it is harmful to themselves but rather in a case where they benefit but others suffer.

Do not give a generic answer like "atheists can be just as moral as theists". Because although that may be true would be ignoring the question.

Update:

Maorog - Why would someone care about being beneficial in the long run? He wants something now.

Update 2:

Marong - Hey the point is to answer this question, not another question.

Yes bad behavior, that's what I am talking about. Like murder and rape and theft. Call it what you want. I call it evil. It exists in the sense that people do do these things and people get pleasure out of doing these things. That's what I mean.

I note that several answers include the emotions/feelings of compassion and empathy as if they produce a universal standard for behavior that we ought to obey. But in an atheistic worldview, those emotions/feelings are there because they allow our society to control our behavior. That is because those feelings and emotions are rather easily molded to fit the circumstances. Observe how easily any empathy or compassion for the unborn child is turned off.

In an atheistic worldview, it if feels right, it must be right an if it feels wrong, it must be wrong.

  • Morality is empathy. Knowing how our actions harm others allows us to know what is good and what is not. The evolutionary drives that encourage that empathy allow us to live in societies, which has in turn driven our success as a species.

That does not stop us from DOING evil it seems. For example, religious people will often define as evil one who goes against their god, even though the rest of us do not consider it so at all. Meanwhile, the Christian god condones the rape of captured women and calls for their enslavement to provide wives for the men of his tribes. Actions most non Christians would define as obvious evil. Morality is an evolutionary benefit, but mankind, especially when driven by religious belief, is able to act in ways that overrule that drive.

Eh, humans are social animals. Anti-social behavior is not beneficial in the long run. They will be put in jail, and then what?

"Evil" is a human invention, by the way. In a world without humans, "evil" doesn't exist. Evil is what harms the group, good is what helps the group. If you are evil, the group will punish you for harming it.

It's called compassion. Humans, primates, and many other species show compassion and empathy toward others.

Evil is a state of mind, not a state of belief.

Atheism is not a belief and therefore evil has nothing to do with it.

Realize the difference between belief, human nature, and this type of ignorance

Our morality is linked to our empathy. We evolved empathy to live in a social society so we could survive. Some have more empathy, some have less. You can have very little empathy but still be a good person, if you follow the rules that the rest of us like. Morals, good or bad, are really just inventions so we can make sense of things we like and dislike in behavior.

Good and evil are concepts created by humans. Humans created morality so that they could form societies and survive. They also formed religions to explain things they couldn't understand.
