Suggestions for varieties of bush tomatoes please?

I have a small garden and hence only a small greenhouse. Last year the tomatoes (standard cordon varieties) did very well but were hitting the roof before the plants were ready for pinching the growing tips out. I thought I might try the less tall bush varieties this year but note that most of those are bred for outdoor growing. As I live in the north of England we struggle with that. Can anyone suggest any bush toms that would do ok in the greenhouse. Many thanks.

    Hi Budge,

You definitely need to look at growing determinate types. Indeterminate types of tomatoes will continue to grow all season, while the determinate types will set the majority of their fruit all at the same time. Since you are growing in a greenhouse, you should be able to start seeds every couple of weeks for a month so you have a longer growing season if you wish.

Some suggestions: Roma (most are determinate & these are really meaty and flavorful), Siletz is a nice option (even though determinate, you'll have tomatoes all season & they are a nice size), Burbank Red is a larger determinate variety, Lime Green is nice for a color change (they are at their peak when kind of amber-colored & they ripen early. This one is semi-determinate) You have lots of choices!

    I LOVE the choices here.

Hello Budge. The problem you have is that most tomatoes that are breed for greenhouse growing are designed to continue growing, which is exactly what you do not want to happen. The type of tomato you should look for is a determinate type. A determinate tomato sets its fruits around the same period of time and does not grow as tall. On the other hand, if you want tomatoes all season long, you will have to put up with the plant continuing to grow. Good luck with your tomatoes.

If you grow determinate types they won't get as big. You can grow them in succession. Determinate give you all the tomatoes at once, like for canning. Also they are many small bush types now a days for pots, like Totem or Window Box Roma. You many also want to try small cherry/salad tomatoes which are small but very tasty.

I would sugest Gardeners Delight and Shirley, they both grow very well in the greenhouse.

I'd suggest going to your nearest garden center and asking the folks there about each variety. they can give you more info about that than most of us in here because we are not in your area. The professionals can give you more information about what you are looking for.

    Good luck.

This seems to be a reputable site. I am quite an avid gardener myself, if you need any information, just send me a message.
