How much substrate for a 5gal?

I have decided I would finally like to start a planted aquarium. I've done research and found some nice low-tech plants and everything else, but before I even think of purchasing them, I need to find some gravel.

Now, I only have a 5 gallon tank and the 20lb bags of eco-complete I was looking at is just too much gravel. Can anyone help me with finding smaller amounts of a substrate that works just as well for plants or tell me how many pounds of gravel I'll actually need?

About 2 and half inches of substrate. I use Fluorite and it works great. I have DHG on it and its growing! Love the stuff! All bags are around 20lb.

I would suggest Seachem's Fluorite because it is working for me :)

Crypts will do well in this substrate also if you have a good light you can have stem plants and driftwood with Christmas moss :)

You have to rinse very well though before adding it! Love the flourite. You can get Flourite Black or even Sand! (^_^).

About 5 pounds of gravel. Try looking for a 10 pound bag, or smaller, online. It doesn't hurt to keep extra!
