What sort of pop music do people with sophisticated tastes like, if at all?
By sophisticated tastes, I mean anyone who does not just listen to mainstream music; and also has a solid understanding of the non mainstream music they like (e.g. not have a song just because of its cool factor or because it appeared on your favorite show/game).
So what sort of pop do these people like? Do they like mainstream pop, retro pop, art pop or no pop at all?
And do they substitute their need for pop music with another genre such as ambient music, electronic, post rock, jazz, indie, pop metal, British Invasion, psychadellic rock, neo progressive, punk, reggae etc.
BQ: Heaviest poppy song ever?
BQ2: Least favorite pop song?
BQ3: Favorite pop song?
@Azarel- thats very true but people, no matter how sophisticated thier tastes are will need something less mentally taxing to fall back on; just to chill off and relax.
For example, I hate mainstream pop but I enjoy certain art pop and pop rock artists (Peter Gabriel etc).
I also listen to music that substitutes the role that pop music would play in more mainstream minded people. Specifically, melodic and catchy metal and neo progressive rock.

The kind written by Chopin, haha
No... Some pop I don't mind. I went through a really bad Lady Gaga phase that seems to have cooled a bit, which saves me some embarrassment. I really, really like Lana del Rey, but not too sure if she qualifies.
And I can't say I've ever had a need for pop music in my adult life, and I mostly listen to older bands (The Doors, Blondie, etc.), or classical music, preferably classical piano.
The rest of it:
-BQ: I have absolutely no idea what you mean by "heavy" pop song I'm afraid!
-BQ2: least... Anything by the Bieber-boy :)
-BQ3: falling back to the 80' for this one, and either When Doves Cry by Prince and the Revolution (one of my best ever songs), or Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics
:)

This is really amusing. I was born in 1963 and went through school with all of the classics. I have many older siblings who all had individual musical taste and my younger brother was a proficient acoustic and electric guitarist. My friends all had even more music to offer, and I lived in Europe and traveled all over the continent during the eighties. My mother loved classical music and I am familiar with it, too. Classic rock used to be mainstream, so are you saying it wasn't sophisticated when is was? What I listen to entirely depends upon my mood which can vary all over the place. My CD case is full of everything from every decade in plenty of genres. I am sophisticated and I don't need to prove myself to you.

there is no such thing as 'classy pop music.'
there's junk like mumford & sons and the lumineers, which is just pop music for pretentious people.

Pop music is made for the majority of people (the ones who don't understand music at all), so I guess people with "sophisticated tastes" do not like pop music because they seek for complexity and depth in the music :)
