Has the U.S. government ever officially/publicly apologised to Japan for the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings?
I'm not American or Japanese, I'm just interested to know.

Apologize? Hell no and rightly so. Japan bombed the crap out of us at Pearl Harbor, killing 3,000 neutral military personnel and civilians. In fact, Japan was the first nation in the Pacific War to launch attacks against U.S. non-combatants at Pearl Harbor as most of the U.S. citizens there were not engaged in war effort against any nation. Japan brutalized and mistreated U.S. POWs during WWII in events such as Bataan Death March and Japan's hellships, and using them as human live subjects such as Unit 731. Japan was the first nation in the Second Sino-Japanese War and Pacific War to use WMDs (i.e., chemical and biological weapons) against an adversary, killing between 400,000-500,000 Chinese people. Japan is the only nation to use biological weapons in warfare (unlike the U.S.), is the only nation to use them on a large scale in warfare (unlike the U.S.), and is one of the many nations to use WMDs on a large scale like Britain, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, Iraq, etc, (unlike the U.S.).
The targets of the nuclear weapons in combat were not enemy civilians but enemy combat troops, military bases, munitions factories, and military communication centers, all of these installations were inside populated areas in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As such, both cities were legitimate targets.
Hiroshima had a military population of 40,000 (you cannot classify that kind of population as small and cheap, no matter how much you slice it) along with hundreds of factories (half of them were making booby traps to deter the U.S. invasion of Japan), military depots, and military headquarters of the 2nd General Army and the 5th Division which were responsible for the defense of southern Japan. Nagasaki had a military population of 9,000 but also an important naval and industrial base: dozens of big Mitsubishi factories making torpedoes, ship-building industries which previously made the Japanese battleship Yamato, and hundreds of other small workshops making war materials. Enemy civilians made weapons in factories for their military, making themselves legitimate targets and hence were attacked so that war materials would not be made for the enemy in the battlefront.
The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were NOT designed to inflict civilian casualties but to destroy strategic targets in effort to destroy the enemy's ability to wage war. Saying both bombs were designed to inflict civilian casualties is a poor ridiculous argument. Both cities were chosen because they had lower level of civilian population than any other high-value target in Japan. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were less than 400,000 people. If the United States Air Force wanted to maximize civilian casualties, they could have nuked Tokyo and Kyoto, both cities had populations of over 1 million.
So no, bombing two enemy cities that were making weapons of war does not warrant an apology, period. The atomic bombs that were dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved many Japanese and American lives in the end by making a ground invasion unnecessary. In war, collateral damage happened – and the blame rests firmly on the shoulders of Japan.
Or you have no problem with unleashing the ocean of carnage and slaughter that a land invasion of Japan would've involved, and hunting down and exterminating Japanese combatants and non-combatants alike house to house, 'elevator to elevator', like the Soviets had to do against the Nazis in Stalingrad and during their march to Berlin. We certainly have applied the same measures we used in the Okinawa invasion, where we sealed them into caves to suffocate, or burned them alive via close-quarters flamethrowers. Japan should be glad we bombed them into submission rather than unleashing the invasion that would brought widespread destruction of property and lives on both sides.

It can be credibly argued that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved hundreds of thousands of Japanese lives, as well as the lives of hundreds of thousands of American, Russian and Commonwealth troops who certainly would have been killed in an amphibious assault on Japan and the bloody campaign that would have followed. And Japan would have been divided into a Communist North and a pro-West South like Korea or Germany with the Russians taking Hokkaido. No need to thank us though.

They started it. They bombed Pearl Harbor knowing full well they could be unleashing a titan and that is excactly what happened. Has Japan ever apologized to China for Nanking and all the other massacres. Japanese soldiers purposely shot over 320,000 prisoners of war, raped and killed thousand of women in Nanking alone. They've never admitted to anything. Of the millions of Chinese POW's the Japanese took in their war in China only 50 have ever been found alive. Has anyone ever asked where the rest went? Thousands of American personnel were taken prisoner when the Japanese sank the USS Houston, took Guam and Wake Island plus the Phiillipines. Thousands of those prisoners have never been accounted for. The same for the British. The Japanese took 1000's of British and Canadian Army and Navy Personnel prisoners when they took Singapore,Hong Kong and European Enclave in Shanghai. Thousands of those are still unaccounted for.

Have the Japanese ever apologized for the Rape of Nanking? Have they ever apologized for holding untold thousands of non-military European men, women, and children in concentration camps during the war? Did they ever apologise for turning thousands and thousands of women, both asian and European, into forced prostitutes during the war, making them service Japanese service men, day and night?
I don't think so. Screw the Nips. As my old nan used to say, you can trust a German, but never a Nip!

Not that I am aware of and I would hope they never have apologised. It was held during a time of war and casualties are expected
