Is compulsively obsessing, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?
I obsess about many different things. Some of them are important to most people, others are important only to me, and some of them I don't even feel are important, yet I am compelled to think about them. I understand that OCD is typically characterized by obsessing over an action and then feeling compelled to do that action in an attempt to relieve the stress caused by the obsession. I suppose my question is, can the obsession itself be the action that one is compelled to do? I don't have any of the typical symptoms, lock checking, hand washing, or other unnecessary or excessive rituals. But I have a compulsion to obsess. I fell like if I don't think about something, then... I don't know, something bad will happen. But I can be kept up at night, or away from the things that I should be doing, thinking about world problems that I couldn't possibly fix, or what it would take to convince me of the existence of leprechauns, or how I could have better handled that situation with a bully when I was in the 5th grade, or how I obsess too much instead of sleeping or doing the dishes. Is this OCD or some other anxiety disorder? I also suffer from depression and my obsessions are at times about suicide, usually in quite disturbing, albeit unrealistic, ways. I'll spare you the gory details in sake of your own mental health. :)
Yedidia26 - I appreciate the gesture, trying to save my soul and all, but I assure you that I'm much better off without the supernatural in my life to complicate things even more. This is a question about mental health, not religion. I've asked many questions in the religion section, and may in the future. If I do, I invite you to respond to me there, but your response to this question is not appropriate.

It sounds like you have what is termed "ruminations", which is a part of depression. Anxiety disorders often are "comorbid" with depression; so I would not rule this out. I do not think you have OCD, although components can overlap between mental disorders. Generally, to calm those thoughts down, most people start with medication like Zoloft or Paxil, but a lot of folks discourage the use of medications. My personal opinion is that meds can help in the beginning, but should be stopped after the person learns better ways to cope with their ruminations. There are various treatments available. One I use with people is called The Depression Cure formulated by Dr. Stephen Ilardi. He uses a 6-step treatment that I have had success with in treating people with depression. The book is available on Amazon. I have the Kindle version. Another treatment that seems productive, especially for your set of symptoms is Cognitive-Behavior therapy.
