  • Is compulsively obsessing, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

I obsess about many different things. Some of them are important to most people, others are important only to me, and some of them I don't even feel are important, yet I am compelled to think about them. I understand that OCD is typically characterized by obsessing over an action and then feeling compelled to do that action in an attempt to relieve the stress caused by the obsession. I suppose my question is, can the obsession itself be the action that one is compelled to do? I don't have any of the typical symptoms, lock checking, hand washing, or other unnecessary or excessive rituals. But I have a compulsion to obsess. I fell like if I don't think about something, then... I don't know, something bad will happen. But I can be kept up at night, or away from the things that I should be doing, thinking about world problems that I couldn't possibly fix, or what it would take to convince me of the existence of leprechauns, or how I could have better handled that situation with a bully when I was in the 5th grade, or how I obsess too much instead of sleeping or doing the dishes. Is this OCD or some other anxiety disorder? I also suffer from depression and my obsessions are at times about suicide, usually in quite disturbing, albeit unrealistic, ways. I'll spare you the gory details in sake of your own mental health. :)

  • How do I help my partner to feel useful while he's recovering?

My partner is recovering from Guillain–Barré syndrome ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillain%E2%80%93Barr... ) which has him feeling very useless. He still needs a wheelchair to get around and his coordination is pretty bad. He's recovering pretty fast compared to most people who come down with it, mostly because he's so young, but to him it's not fast enough. He feels pretty useless and I just want to make him feel better. He normally, draws to make himself feel better, but his coordination is so bad that this isn't a good option.

  • Atheists: What would you accept as confirmation of the existence of a god or gods?

I'm an atheist myself, and I don't really think that anything would convince me. The Arthur C. Clarke quote "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Also known as his third Law of prediction, would negate any sort of "evidence" that I could conceive of. Couldn't it be an alien? A time traveler? A visitor from an alternate universe? Not to mention the fact that I might be hallucinating or simply not taking in the information accurately. There are an infinite number of natural explanations that, while improbable, are far more likely than a supernatural one. What are your thoughts?

  • Why do I get short of breath so easily?

I usually notice it when I'm just lying down to go to bed. As I lay there, my heart rate increases and I have a hard time catching my breath as if I've just run a short distance, but all I've done is walked to my bed and gotten under the covers. I'm 5' 10' 170 lbs, so a little overweight, but not too bad. When I come back from a walk, It often takes me several minutes before I completely catch my breath, and my heart rate is quite high. This isn't a new thing but something that's been going on for as long as I can remember, it's just never caused enough of a problem to have it checked out.

I had an EKG done about two years ago, and they found no abnormalities, although I wasn't having it tested for this problem, but to see if I had any reactions to a drug that I was on at the time. I seem to have this problem regardless of what medications I'm taking.

About 10 years ago, I had to take a physical exam for a job that I had gotten. Part of that included a lung capacity test, which I had to take twice, and just barely passed on the second try. I very rarely drink, I've never smoked tobacco, and I haven't smoked cannabis on a regular basis in about 12-13 years. (I still smoke pot once every few months or so if a friend has some, but never more that one hit.)

I'm sure I should probably see my doctor about this but I was wondering what could be causing this so that I have a little bit to go on before seeing her.

  • When the original Nyan Cat is a Pop Tart, why is the one at Nyan.cat a piece of buttered toast?

I know that this is about a silly internet meme, but I'm genuinely curious. I'm wondering if it has to do with this other meme:

  • Vegetarians, Vegans, and Omnivores. What are your best arguments for your diet?

I'm mostly looking for moral arguments, but compelling practical arguments will also be appreciated. I'm currently an Omnivore, but I find the moral arguments for vegetarianism and veganism compelling. I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I don't do a lot of research on where my meat comes from. While I do think that it's possible to raise meat in a humane way, I have little doubt that most of the meat I eat isn't. But I'd like to hear what you think.

  • Fellow atheists: Why do you think that so many theists...?

...can't understand the burden of proof. They wouldn't believe a claim that one of us made without any evidence. They make a special exception for their god. If I claim that I speak for God, but that the Bible is false, Christians would dismiss my claim, and rightly so. I have no evidence to back it up. The same goes for Muslims and the Koran, or Jews and Torah, or Hindus and the Bhagavad Gita, etc. My question is, do you think they honestly don't believe that the burden of proof lies with the person making the claim, or do you think they believe their god is an exception to the rule?

  • What are the odds that an Intelligent alien race would be humanoid?

In most movies and TV shows the aliens are portrayed as humanoid, however out of the multitude of species that have existed on earth, only one, humanity, has been humanoid. It's highly unlikely that any alien race would be humanoid, but how unlikely? Could it be possible that somewhere nearby there could be a humanoid alien race?

  • Will getting a domestic partnership affect our social security benefits?

My partner and I are California residents looking to legalize our relationship. We both receive Social Security disability benefits and know that a federal marriage affects the benefits of a straight couple negitively. Would a California gay marriage be safe, or would a domestic partnership be a better way to go? I'm worried that a domestic partnership might have it's Social Security disadvantages too, in which case, will may just remain legaly single.

  • Haz una cara? Why is this the Hellman's (Best Food's) Spanish slogan?

I think the translation is "You make a face," which makes no sense to me. Does that automaticaly imply a good face? Maybe I'm just thinking too much in English.

  • Where can I buy great burnet?

The plant "Great Burnet" (or Sanguisorba Officinalis) not salad burnet or lesser burnet. I'd appreciate it if I could find a place to buy seeds online.

  • Should I work something out whith the Credit company, or let it go to a collection agency?

My credit is on shaky ground as it is. My boyfriend thinks that I should just let it go into collections, but I feel like I should work something out with the creditor. I think he's worried that we won't be able to pay our other bills, like electricity, phone, and car insurence. His credit is worse than mine, so I feel like my idea is better than his. I currently have no income but I'm waiting on a disability claim to come through. I'm totaly broke and I don't know how I can fix this problem.

  • What Alanis Morissette video is this?

I remember watching this video, but I don't remember which song it is. It's a somewhat recent song and in the video they show clips of her other videos in reverse order, ending with old videos from her "pop princess" era. The lips from the old video clips are synced up to the new song. What song is this? Could someone tell me?
