What does sound of footsteps mean in a film?

I am doing a scene on Macbeth. The scene starts from where Macbeth walks towards Lady Macbeth after killing Duncan and the scene ends at the part where Lady Macbeth and Macbeth wash their hands near the well.

There are a lot of sounds of footsteps of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in the scene. Why did Polanski (director) use the sound of footsteps? What is Polanski trying to show us through the technique? Do you guys know any other techniques in the scene?

Can someone help me? I have this assesment due on Friday and I have to figure out why he uses footsteps?

Please and Thanks in advance =)

Foot steps typically mean someone else is coming into the scene but if not usually shows the progression of the characters as they move through life changing experiences. Talk about how it is a symbol for change and signifies character development along with the importance of this scene in regards to the whole play.

You have to put your mind in the character. If you'd just killed someone and then you heard footsteps, you'd be nervous and scared because you can't see the person yet who the footsteps belong to. It's a way of creating tension for the viewer. It makes the viewer nervous for the character.
