A town has a population of 2,800 people on Jan 1, 2001 and is increasing by 5% every year. Estimate (to the nearest hundred) what the population will be on January 1, 2010?

    Number of years = 2010 – 2001 = 9 years

    use compound interest formula

    A = P( 1 + r/100)^N

    = 2800(1 + 5/100)^9

    = 4344

    You do 2800*1.05^9 = 4344 to nearest hundred 4300.

    Or population(2800) *percentage increase per year(5% so 1.05)^number of years(9)
