naruto fans: what are the "stages" of being a ninja?
So basically, I have the general idea, the students go to the academy, graduate
...and then they are genin, and if they pass the brutal chunin exams, they are chunin, and then I'm not exactly sure what they have to do to become jonin, (and if I correct), if they are really amazing and well liked by their home village they become a kage, or the kazekage like Gaara after they have been a chunin for a considerable amount of time
So, what are the "requirements" at each stage?
Note: I have seen over 400 naruto episodes, and I'm preparing a speech on the naruto universe, but I'm kind of uncertain about those conditions because I'm having some difficulty compartmentalizing everything.

They start at the Academy to learn the basics, after graduation they become Genin. The lowest rank of ninja that are usually sent on minor tasks or apprenticed to experienced Jonin.
The next rank is Chunin. The exams test their leadership and tactical skills, as well as overall strength and capability as a ninja. Those who pass achieve this rank.
Jonin is the next rank up. These are highly skilled ninja and very experienced in battle. It's actually unknown exactly what the process is. There was a mention of some kind of Jonin exam, but they may also be promoted by the higher ups who judge them.
Kage are often the most powerful ninja in the villages and leaders of them. Usually the former Kage will appoint their successor. However, in some cases the Jonin and Elders of the village can name them if necessary. I'm sure they take in a lot of factors for it like: overall strength, virtues/ideals, capability as a leader, wisdom, responsibility, etc etc.
ANBU are a special elite class under direct control of the Kage, primarily in the Leaf and Mist villages. They're hand picked by the Kage themselves for their own reasons. Age, previous rank and backgrounds play no part in the decision.

Genin: Is the first stage of being a ninja. It's basically the lowest rank. After you graduate from the academy you will be given a special mission/training. You have to pass it in order to become a genin. 66% of students fail mostly, and they are held back a year. Genins have the lowest type of missions. Rank D or rank C. However, they barely get to rank C because it can involve dangerous stuff. Rank D is when you help out citizens, like taking care of children, watering plants, boring and simple stuff. However, they do get assigned to A or B ranked missions under some circumstances.
Chuunin: This is where the cool starts. Training must be done regularly in order to become fit for a chuunin. There's an exam that takes place every year to be promoted to become a chuunin. Chuunins get assigned to C and B missions. They sometimes get assigned to A or even S if they are strong enough. This is when dangerous stuff are mostly involved, but not too often.
Jounin: A high ranked ninja. They get to perform numerous tasks involving crazy dangerous missions. A, B, C, and S rank are their missions, mostly. By the time they reach Jounin though, they master 2 or more elements. They're basically the cool ones.
Tokubetsu Jounin: They are 'special' jounin who excel in a specific area/talent. They sometimes used for interrogating, training other people, and other stuff where they can use their talent.
ex: Mind reading, interrogation, etc.
Kages are the highest ranked of all. They are in charge of their village and they are the strongest of them all. They are worthy of the title and it's their duty to protect their village.
S-Ranked: they are former ninjas or weren't at all. They are extremely dangerous criminals.
