Is a trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific an appropriate birthday present for a 1 year old?

It's for my niece. Of course I will buy her clothes and toys too but since the day she was born I have always wanted to take a trip with her to the Aquarium of the Pacific to see the penguins. I shared this with her father and my mother and they liked the idea and hoped that I would one day do it. I spoke to the baby's mother and it turns out she really wants to do that with her son. So I thought it might be a good birthday present to send my niece, her parents and her brother to the aquarium for a fun family outing. What do you think? She's very inquisitive so the trip wouldn't be wasted on account of her not understanding that its interesting and of course I'd take her again when she's older but it seems fitting right now for some reason. If not, give my better ideas please (toys, books, places to see, etc. I'm very open to suggestion) Thanks.

It's not inappropriate, but it's an expensive trip when she may get bored quickly. Her being inquisitive doesn't mean she'll enjoy the outing for very long. Other than the penguins, the Aquarium's pretty boring for younger ones, in my experience. If it was just you and her with you getting a discount for yourself I'd think it was a better idea, but no, I personally wouldn't spend the money to send the rest of the family for what may only be an hour or two.

One is much too soon for that to be her present. She will tire easily, possibly even fall asleep in her stroller, or get cranky and cry and no one likes to be around a crying baby no matter where they are. Diapers will need to be changed and sure there are diaper areas in restrooms, but why put everyone through that now when she won't remember it for very long.

Save that present for when she is about 4 or 5.

Get her books with all kinds of fish, penguins, etc and talk to her and read to her about what she will see one day at the Aquarium. You can start telling her that "when you turn 4 your present will be a trip to the Aquarium.." Really build up to it and then it will be SO exciting for her. Then no diapers to worry about, she won't tire as easily etc.

For her first birthday present i would keep it simple. A toy or two age appropriate.
