Sick days from work?

I have been at the same company now for just over 2 years and never had a day off. However this last Friday after a week long period of having flu i finally had the day off.

I called in sick and gave enough notice. It is only a small company with around 4-5 people in each day, but i made sure they would have enough cover.

After looking on the internet sick pay can often depend on what pay i get (£200 a week).

My manager is saying that as i have used all of my holidays that i have to either make up the hours or just not get paid for that day.

Is this right?? I want to find out before i go ask the MD.

My manager is a bit of a hypochondriac and just has hours here and there to go to the doctors on a fairly regular basis and i believe she gets paid for them. She is also regularly late as she lives about 20 minutes away and uses traffic as an excuse. I have never had a single day off and i have only been late once (by ten minutes).

What should i do????

Update:

I'd have been better off having the full bloody week off then!!

My manager is a 24 year old that has been put in the managerial position because she was the only choice (very very long story which i wouldn't go into as it's very confusing) basically she doesn't deserve the position and she has gone power crazy. There have been numerous complaints made about her and she has recently had a verbal warning from the MD for recording us while she was out of the room without consent. Proper cow!!

Doesn't matter what your manager does. My employer only pays sick pay after three days of sickness - its in our contracts. Best read yours.

You will get nothing for just one day off sick, your cow will make sure of that. Margaret S above is right, you don't get paid anything for the first three days off sick so you really should have taken the whole week off and even if you did you would only get paid AFTER the first 3 working days. So if you took 5 working days off, you would only get paid two of them and that is a miserable £17.34 per day. Forget the £200 per week because whoever told you that was wrong.

SSP is deliberately kept very low by the government so that it forces people back into work FAST.

Your employment contract will tell you whether you are paid

when you are off sick, or not

Being paid while off sick is a company decision, not a legal one

What your manager does and does not do, is totally irrelevant

so check your employment contract and see what it states

The first three days of any illness are never paid for unless you have negotiated yourself a better deal.
