Why weren't there televised presidential debates from 1964 to 1972?

...given the effect the presidential debate between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy had on the election in 1960.

    In 1964 Johnson had a large lead and had no reason to debate Goldwater. He ended up carrying 45 States. In 1968 Nixon wanted no part of debates as they would have to be three way with George Wallace. In 1972 when Nixon had a huge lead, he had no reason to debate. In 1976 the race was close and both sides thought they could get an advantage. Ford made a misstatement that Poland was not under Soviet control, and that made the margin to elect Carter. The structure set for that debate left the parties with an agreement to continue each election cycle

    Many felt it won the election for JFK Nixon had five o'clock shadow and sweat on his upper lip
