After a disaster why do some people seek comfort from a god that could have prevented the disaster to begin with?
I am very puzzled.

I;m certain that my sweet unborn baby still would have died at birth regarless if I was a devout Christian or not. At that point in time it was our third lost of a child & that's without medical problems involved. We did'nt run to church & begged god to give us a reason. These events & a few others surely convinced me that if there was a god he or she was not a very good one. Consiquently I do not nor will ever believe there is such a person or being or whatever folks want to call it. To me it's much easier to touch & hold a real person to express my undying love for them, not to have "faith" as some put it in a god dreamed up by men & written about in a book just to scare the heck out of the mass'es of poor & illiterate & gullible people. There is more love in my life than any you can imagine without some religious twerps whispering in my ear that I should'nt do this or I should'nt do that because it's a sin. No thanks. I still cannot fathom that a god would allow an airplane with 239 people on board to crash in the ocean surely killing all of them. I need someone to convince me that every single person on board were evil including the children & needed to be dispossed of from the human race. Come on Christians, please ask your god to give us a reasonable answer that we can truely believe. I seriously doubt if anyone can do that. THAT is my opinion.

Read the book of Job, and you will see life is a test, a moral test to see if we will stay the moral course, or become hateful and greedy when hardship comes our way. It is a Christian belief that all suffering is a result of sin, and if we lived the way we should these disasters would not happen. Just as Adam and Eve sinned and were cast out of paradise, so is our imperfections holding us back from making this world a paradise. Disasters are due to a separation from God, from whom all good things come, including mercy during a time of just punishment, as is described in Revelation.

Btw we do not deserve the life that we have .We live in a world of cause and effect. We know that we can drown in water or get burned in a fire. The universe is governed by natural laws. When these laws are challenged, we shall not always escape. If God kept changing His natural laws to protect us from ourselves, how would that encourage responsible behaviour?
However, there are disasters which man cannot foresee, like lack of rainfall. God is the Master of the Universe, not man (Job 38:1-4). We shall not, in this present age, fully understand God's mind. But, we are all part of a common humanity. Just as God "sends rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matthew 5:45), so also natural disasters affect the innocent and guilty alike. If God's servants were always specially protected, people would come to Him for the wrong reasons. God's power is great and and we are weak.He does not give us a guarantee of security in this life. That should encourage us to listen to His message of salvation

Not only "could have prevented" but actually caused it.
If God is all powerful and created the world, he could have easily created a world that was geographically stable enough that there were no earthquakes, mudslides, avalanches, etcetera. But he chose to create all that stuff, thereby causing a lot of death and destruction.

Because, ironically, when someone loses complete control over their life, it's comforting to believe that someone else has a great plan for everything and this bad stuff is just part of it (for the greater good, no less). It's a coping mechanism, to make sense of things, basically.

We are ALL under natural law. The law of cause and effect. If human cause disaster, then it will happen. Remember, that God give us freedom whatever we want to do.
God cannot be mocked. Whatever a man sow, so shall he reap.
First is, do you pray that God will keep you from disaster or not? That God will protect you from evil person and evil spirit?
God is Almighty, that's why we ask comfort from Him.

Also confused about how some say it is miracle from god when someone survived. That means god killed or at the very least allowed the death of any others who died.

Do you really want to know or you are just asking questions aimlessly to try to make God look evil? His plan is for us to pray constantly. Those who ignore him deserve disasters happening to them.
