Is a Car Salesman good for a collge student?

Im 18 and about to graduate high school next month, and I'm going to college for mechanical engineering. I want to be a engineer for GM. And I want to get my foot in the door. I want to work with GM products because that's where I want to be and I want a job were I can apply what I learn in school in a related job. Plus I think being a car salesman I can pay for some of my schooling then using loans all the time. I was just wondering if the engineering works with the car sales man? Plus, I'm looking to buy my first car within the next 6 months and maybe I'll figure out witch one I rather have. Thanks for your input! :)

I say go for it. If you love the product, you will make a great salesperson. The hours are long, though.

Not all states require salespersons to pay for their own licenses. Our state costs less than $75.00 per year and the dealership foots the bill.

BTW, don't listen to people that say you have to lie to be successful, that's bull@#$%. I have worked in the new car dealership business for 23 years, our best salespeople are the honest ones (that's why their customers come back again and again), and while I was a salesman myself, I wanted to prove that you could be successful by being honest - I was right.

I recently graduated in engineering 3 years ago and I worked in the car dealership business for over 10 years in 3 different dealerships.

It is extremely tough to get a job as a car sales man part time. Most dealerships will only hire full time and make you work 5-6 days per week at more than 40 hours. The reason why is customers. Many customers get to know salesmen may prefer to deal with you rather than someone else. And the salesmen need to be flexible for the customers in appointments and schedules.

As an engineering student, I worked 28 hours per week, 3 days per week in pizza delivery. I worked 6 hours on Wednesdays after class, 12 hours on Saturdays, and 10 hours on Sundays. With 28 hours per week, I barely had time to do homework or study and I did not see any friends that semester since I was always busy.

A few other factors that make it tough. Car salesmen need licenses to sell cars. I heard it is $300 but I am sure it differs from state to state. A car dealership probably won't hire you if they know you are a student because student workers are typically unreliable and they always quit when they graduate college or find an internship.

Online Car Sales, Lot Attendant, Parts or Customer Service departments, and dealer mechanics are also typically full time long hour jobs.

IF you live near GM in Michigan or one of their other plants in other states like the Corvette plant in Kentucky, you can try to get a job as an assembler or QA tech in the summer to get your foot in the door in terms of the manufacturing side of GM.

I have a GOOD friend who was fired as a car salesman because he was too HONEST!! I rate car salesmen right up there with lawyers who drool over cases where someone slipped on a slippery sidewalk. You can make lots of money selling cars....and you'll know exactly what the cost is of the car so you'll be TRAINED to lead the possible buyer astray when they ask certain questions..even when it comes down to financing. The dealership might have a quota of cars you are suppose to sell...being a Engineering Student won't help you....but knowing about specifics about the car you're selling would. It's a job....try it...but as I said...my friend got dumped because he couldn't LIE to people about buying a car. How does that sit with you? Your life...your call.

In my last year of college, I worked as a salesman and F&I manager at a local Toyota/Lexus dealer. Luckily, I only had 6 hours left to get my degree. If I would've had to take a full load of classes, I would not have worked at a dealer.

Being a car salesperson means LONG hours, weekends, and plenty of down time in the dealership finding leads. This does not equate to being a good line of work for a college student. You have to give 100% effort into the job in order to be successful.

The problem for a young sales person at a new car dealer is that many people won't take you seriously. Many older clients prefer to deal with someone older and with more experience/knowledge ( whether that experience and knowledge is real or not doesn't really matter...it's all about that perception and bias ).
