This song is much harder to sing that is it seem to be and it catches beginner level singers out. ( Beginner level singers are those that haven't had any singing lessons or musicianship training.) Singing songs isn't just about singing the right notes, you have to get the word stresses in the right place for the song to make sense.

Right lets start with the first phrase. Somewhere over the rainbow. To make sense the first beat of the first bar has to be stronger than anything that follows so 'some' has to be stronger than where. Basically if you were saying somewhere you probably would put the stress on the Some and not the where because the first part of the word is the important stress not the where. This causes a problem for beginner level singers because they often don't have enough control of their voices to sing the somewhere the other way round with the strong stress on the 'some' and the weaker stress on the where. Now it is also a rainbow not a bow, at the moment this is not clear because you have more stress on the bow than the rain and UP is not as important in the phrase as HIGH, you are describing where this land is to a listener. If you don't get the stresses in the right places you finish up with a song that is about a SOME a BOW and an UP.

If you had had a lot of singing lessons with a qualified teacher and had learned about the different stresses on different beats in a bar and had actually seen this song written down in music notation you would have a much better idea of how it is supposed to sound. As I said singing songs isn't just about singing notes with a good sound it also has a lot to do with making the song make sense. You can't just sing high notes louder because that is easier to do you have to be able to control your voice so that you can sing exactly what you need to. This takes years of singing lessons to learn how to sing using the correct sing techniques, learning to read music, and learning music theory.
