what books do you recommend for a 10 year old?

My daughter is just about to start on the last Harry Potter book so I need some recommendations for what she should read next please. She is 10 years old and loves the Harry potter books. She also loved the Narnia books. So some recommendations for similar type books would be appreciated.(SOME books she has already read are Alice in wonderland, through the looking glass, little house on the prairie, Anne of green gables, Charlotte's web, dear dumb dairy series, my sisters a vampire series, etc. )

Based on her apparent fondness for fantasy, try the Divergent series, The Hunger Games series, Eragon or the Percy Jackson series.

When I was her age I was obsessed with fairytales (still am!) so I read lots of classic, original versions, such as Peter Pan and The Grimm's Fairy Tales.

In the UK, there's an author called Jacqueline Wilson who everyone loved when I was younger. Wilson's books may not be as advanced as those your daughter has already read, but they're great and a really good introduction to life in the "real world".

If you fancy introducing a bit of historical reading, the Scholastic "My Story" collection is fab. All the books are really captivating yet they do have fairly accurate historical information.

Back to her reading level, I can vouch for anything by Michael Morpurgo and Eva Ibbotson. I'd suggest Journey to the River Sea by Ibbotson and War Horse, Private Peaceful and Alone on a Wide, Wide Sea by Morpurgo. Have a look at the blurbs for both author's books to find what suits your daughter, they're brilliant writers.

Definitely Percy Jackson series, divergent is probably a little too grown up for a ten year old. Sex and romance fill the pages of divergent, its mainly pg13 and no worse than what you'll see on tv, but perhaps too much for someone so young.

The Golden Compass is another one, a bit controversial if you're religious, but a very good book.

The Percy Jackson series, by Rick Riordan

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, by Michael Scott

    Hope that helps.

When I was around your daughter's age in the '70s, their were girls in my class who were practically addicted to reading books by an author named Judy Blume, who was known for writing books aimed at a young female readers.

As a boy, I had never read any of her books myself. But since she was so popular with her target audience, there must have been some quality in her work.

If she's a fantasy fan, try Wings of Fire (a series about dragons) by Tui Sutherland. But beware some descriptive gore.

I've read Erin Hunter since I was 10, highly recommend all of her series (Warriors, Seekers, Survivors).

Also recommend The Familiars and Starbounders by Adam Epstein and Andrew Jacobson.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman if she's feeling in the mood for mild horror.

These are all children's books so no mature content (if you get my drift) to worry about.

    Try:

    Beyonders

    Artemis Fowl

    Percy Jackson and the Olympians

    The Kane Chronicles

    Fablehaven

    Wondla

    39 clues

    Black Beauty

    The Templeton Twins

    Guardians of Gahoole

I read those books around her age. Which was just a couple of years ago. Wish my sisters could be like her. 12 and they haven't touched anything thicker than 50 pages. I wouldn't suggest Hunger Games or Divergent. They aren't really suitable for 10 year olds.

A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park.

Clear, elegant prose and a philosophical story in a short volume.
