I think it is interesting that subsequent kings in both the Nephite and Lamanite nations were called Nephi and Laman, respectively. The Mayans also did this, calling later kings by the name of earlier kings.
It is also interesting that the Nephites operated under the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood, which is a royal priesthood. Whenever someone wanted to serve a mission to the Lamanites, they had to get permission from the King. The King was also the High Priest. The same is true of Jesus and Joseph Smith; they weren't of the tribe of Levi, and didn't qualify for the Levitical Priesthood, but could be given and were given the Melchizedek Priesthood; kingly authority, given to represent the ultimate king.
