Henna Dye and Dermatillomania?

I have dermatillomania (a compulsive skin picking disorder) so i have sores all over my head. I cant dye my hair with regular hair dye and i was wondering if henna dye would irritate my scalp.

Also, is there any brands that do not have irritating ingredients and have a burgundy red color?

Pure henna is not going to irritate skin, it's actually antifungal and cooling. But you CANNOT use henna over broken skin, and that includes scabs. If henna gets into the living tissue beneath the top layer of skin, it will stain you permanently just like tattoo ink would. It can stain through a scab, so you would not want to use henna unless you're willing to risk having faint freckle spots on your head forever. That's not as much of an issue as the fact that unlike tattoo ink, henna is not a sterile substance and you don't want it inside your living tissue.

When your scalp is healed, henna would be perfectly fine. You'd want 100% pure henna, or a 100% purely botanical blend of henna and other plants. Generally for a burgundy henna mix you'd want mostly henna and a small amount of indigo, nothing else is necessary.

Before switching over to henna I use to have a very dry scalp. I now use use henna, harvest moon aloe shampoo and conditioner( www.hennahut.com), and sukesh ayurveda (http://www.hennasooq.com/sukesh-ayurveda/). All have been wonderful in healing my scalp. Staying away from all chemicals has done wonders for me.
