From what I have seen, most states have one or both of these options:

    - Endorsement to driver's license to ride motorcycles

    - Motorcycle license/permit (Temporary)

Most states usually just have an endorsement to your state issued driver's license. Here in Iowa, it just adds a "Class L" endorsement to your license which allows you to drive a motorcycle legally.

Some states however, you can get a provisional license that will allow you to ride a motorcycle without an official driver's license. It is similar to a permit, but you do not have to always ride with a licensed driver. You do however generally have displacement limits on the bikes you can ride, also there is usually a clause about driving at night time. Usually this type of a license has to be renewed every 1-2yrs as it is designed for riders who haven't gotten their driver's license yet.

However as mentioned, not all states have the provisional license option. You will need to check the DMV in your area to see how they do it.

Where in the world are you?

I don't get the little flag to show me anymore.

In the States - each state has it's own set of laws.

I could have, in my state. I already held an Operator's (auto driver's).

Some states require a car license first.

Some require completion of car driver's ed - you don't need the license, just the ed.

    Some states require a permit.....and a class.

Some (like mine) let you ride on a permit for a period of time.

Only way to know is to know where you are - and I can't look out your window.

Check with your DMV, but I believe you will find that racinngfan3 is correct. That's the way it is here in NY. You have to have your driver's license for 6 months before you can apply for a MC endorsement.
