    You're using a quote from the early 1800s. It was a given that a woman would be in want of a husband at that time. Marriage and babies were pretty much her only option and only goal in life. She would have drawn the attention of lots of male golddiggers.

    Jane Austen grew up in a different society to us. The whole point of society at the time was to get married and carry on your name.
