Americans- bedroom textiles -do u use bedspreads at home ?

Question

In my country (with warm weather- air conditioner aside) bedspreads are not customary.
In all American TV shows and movies you see these used at people's homes. Now, I know that different parts of the US have different climate - but I'm asking from a cultural / functional point of view :

1) Do American use these, or this is a TV invention?
2) Why? I mean, you have a blanket and bedlinen (cover) for it which you wash...
3) Do you take off before going to bed? (putting it on only to prevent dust accumulation / make the bed look tidy?).

A cotton bedspread is used year round. Nothing like a summer afternoon nap on one. A comforter is only for the cold part of winter and in many movies that is what you are seeing. Some people use those comfoters  year round, sometimes just as a decorative piece sometimes just to cover the unmade bed.

What you see on TV is for looks.

It is a custom to have a bedspread or a duvet or comforter on the bed.   They are usually removed or fan folded to the foot of the bed.
They are for looks.  Most Americans have ACS and they can be used for cover.

I have a pretty quilted bedspread,  along with my electric blanket it keeps me warm in winter, and in summer I have the AC on and remove the blanket so I use mine year round,  I like how it looks

No.  I use soft blankets as a cover over my linens.  I never cared for the bedspreads for looks, and they are a hassle.  It is something hotels use, and I'm not into the hotel look.

I use a comfortor no matter what the weather. I remove it before going to bed during hot weather.
