Do you give thumbs down because you are offended?
by my avatar or user name, without even reading my post? Just curious. I don't really care. If I did I would have dozens of sock puppets and become a top contributor myself.
Also, how many give Fireball thumbs down because they think she's a nut.

Thumbing down is like giving a voiceless opinion. It doesn't mean much.

Strangely enough, I either give no rating if I agree with some, but are disappointed with a tangential vector a person's response appears to be hinting or meandering towards and I happen to think a gladiator type grading system is too limiting because it would help the rating system if there existed a neutral or flat palm rating for those of us who neither agree or disagree with the gist of a response.
If I analyze someone's avatar as leaning negative, sometimes I use that to grade their post as true TU or false TD.
Most of the time I grade based solely on the entirety of their post, some people are capable of thinking big picture, others are obsessed with the minutia of a fraction of the big picture and don't care to extrapolate their opinions to justify their narrow views, (like most absolute religious/political responses).

No, I don't think that I have even answered one of your questions. I don't often look at the avatar!

You care enough to ask. I get thumbed down so many times because i am offensive personally.
