How long can you wait to accept a job offer?

I called Employer A just to ask if they were hiring on Tuesday and the manager automatically offered me an interview the next day. He unexpectedly hired me on the spot and I asked if I could have a few days just to consider and look over everything. He said sure, but if I wanted to start next week, I need to put my application/tax forms in on Saturday. I put in an application for a Employer B (which I would prefer) yesterday (I was waiting on permission from my references) and planned on calling to check up on Sunday. I am also putting in another application to Employer C (which would be the most ideal of all 3 jobs) tomorrow. He seemed really interested since he hired and interviewed me so fast. But, if Employers B and C offer the same pay & hours or better, I'm most likely not going to accept the offer at Employer A. How long can I wait to respond to Employer A? Is a full week too long?

Update:

I still feel it's rather unprofessional to start a job, work for 2 weeks, then quit. That makes it look as if I never cared about the job and was lying about my interest the whole time.

A full week is at the line of pushing it. Ideally, 2-4 days is the best.

I was just in your position a week ago. I had employer A call me and we did a phone interview. She said that it will take a week for a follow up to see if I am good for an in person interview. Employer B called me for an interview. I came in and he offered me the job on the spot. No interview needed. He said I exceed qualfications since I'm already working ta job in a similiar field and I have military experience ( he is a vet) He sat me down asked what shift I would prefer and said "if your background clears, you are hired". Never had that kind of "interview" before. I told him to give me a few days. He said okay.

I researched an appropriate amount of time to to wait for a job offer.. and everyone says 1 week is pushing it. 2-4 days is okay. I just took Employer B because Employer A wouldn't get back to me. In the end Employer A sent me a rejection, generic email patronizing me.

Since you just put in applications yesterday and tomorrow.. it's might be difficult to tell them about your interest. See what I was going to advise you was to call them and be like "hey I am very interested in working for you but I have an offer at another company. but I would like to work for you. is there a way to expedite my application" That would work only if you had an interview with Employer B and C since they got a good feel for you. But as a stranger that called and say hey I just applied.. they might not care..

Accept the job already offered. if you get a better offer you just quit and start the other job. If you were offered this job on the spot and they want you to start so soon then obviously this is a c**p job that no one wants so you would not stay long anyway.
