Ask toolbar keeps trying to install itself with software updates. Could this be Malware?
When Java updates itself on my laptop it always asks me if I want to install the Ask toolbar. Similarly with my Norton updates. A friend has suggested this is a sign of malware - is it? I thought Norton was supposed to stop problems like that!
And what do I do about it. The same friend suggests Spyhunter or similar but I understand it's expensive.
Thanks for any advice.

Java has had Ask Toolbar piggybacked on their installer for years, probably for ad revenue.
You can download an installer without drive-bys from here:

Unless you're certain you need Java, it is usually better to not have it installed as it is exploited often.

Okay, if they're letting you choose to install it or not, it's more likely grey-ware, but it's still a huge pain in the a--. Generally, if you're paying for Norton, I'd think they wouldn't bother as Grey-ware is generally tacked on to un-paid services (example, Comical [free comic reading software] suggests installing McAfee safeguard) so they can get a bit of cash for advertising. I would just be sure not to install it, and it shouldn't effect you.

It is not malware. It is a 3rd party piggybacking on something. Java is nesseccary. Just uncheck the boxes for the ask.com toolbar etc when that comes up. It can be more annoying then malware.
