Would an external disk drive work on an xbox 360 work?

Or should I get the internal one fixed as it's broken

    you can only use up to 32gb on a usb hard drive.

    I imagine the Xbox has the OS installed on the internal HD. My friend uses an external HD for storing things but you still need the OS to start it up. You should look up a tutorial on how to replace the internal HD.
