Hand luggage - plastic bags?

Hi there,

It's so long since I've flown anywhere so rules have changed and are new to me. My question is, are you given airline plastic bags for putting certain items in, or do you have to provide your own. I won't be taking any liquids but will be taking stuff like makeup. What kind of thing must I put in the plastic bag, toothpaste, mascara lipstick or what. Millions of people fly each year but I cannot seem to get a proper answer to this question from anyone.

Thanks in advance..

you have to provide your own plastic baggie. (easily found at your local grocery store in the food storage section)

the 3-1-1 rule is for liquids, creams, gels, lotions, pastes, aerosols, sprays... anything with a liquid like consistency so out of the few things you mentioned the toothpaste and mascara would have to go in the baggie.

here is a quick explanation of the 3-1-1 rule...

    -3.4oz (100ml) containers or smaller

-all containers must be placed in a 1 quart size clear plastic zip top baggie

    -only 1 baggie per person

-during security you must take out the baggie and place it in a bin provided to you for it to go through the x-ray machine.

Get your own from the supermarket. It just needs to be a ziplock bag 20cm x 20cm.

I always put liquids in my checked in bag so have never needed it, but I am told airports charge a fortune for bags.

Here's where you'll get all the official information:

There's a search box headed: when I fly, can I bring my......

    Check it out.

As to plastic bags, you bring your own if you decide to use them. The only plastic bag you must use is the 1 quart clear baggie for your liquids, pastes and gels.
