is a diesel worth it?

I am looking to buy a new car, I am trying to think if it's worth having a diesel or a petrol, I roughly do 8000 miles a year..

No. Diesels are much more expensive to own and there is no proof that modern diesels will post those big mileage numbers. Also, you got to remember, even if the engine runs 300,000 miles, you have a car with 300000 miles on it! What kind of shape will that car be in? Also, diesel is far more expensive to buy than gas these days. In the glory days of diesel, it was much less expensive. When diesel engines were worth buying, diesel had sulfur in it and they did get huge mileage numbers, sometimes over 50 MPG. Yes, those are Prius numbers from 1980. But low-sulfur diesel means they get so-so mileage. I would consider a hybrid long before a diesel.

Diesels are known for their longevity and ability to achieve higher mileages, e.g., 200,000, 300,000, 500,000 miles or even more. The extra cost of a diesel engine in a car is formidable, sometimes adding $5000-$8000 or even more to the sticker price. Diesel fuel is inexplicably much higher priced tha gasoline, now running about $.50 more per gallon vs regular gasoline. We could be looking at $5.00 or more per gallon for diesel fuel by this summer, especially at price-gouging stations along Interstates. Go with gasoline (I own a diesel truck and know).

At 8000 miles a year you won't cover the higher annual service costs, certainly not the higher purchase cost, and remember diesel costs more per litre. You will also be looking at early DPF failure as you will rarely get the exhaust hot enough to burn the soot off the filter

Not worth the extra purchase cost and additional servicng with such a low mileage.

The particulate filters may block if you t use the car enough.

If you do not mind to hear the bad noise that diesel cars make then go for it.

  • No way is a Diesel worth it for that mileage. Stick a '1' in front of it then maybe.

With only 8k a year it would be petrol every time.
