What should I do about this boy?

Okay so, I've liked this guy for a while now and today my friend asked him if he liked me and he said i like her but shes kind of stalkerish. And she asked him then why do you stare at her? And he said I don't stare at her like for real. And my friend said yes you do stare at her. And then he just started smiling. And the thing is i'm not stalkerish at all. This has been going on for months. He talks about me behind my back and I talk about him behind his back. Then he goes and stares at me. And all of my friends tells me he stares at me and i see it too. And so one of my other friends said it seems like we both are stalkerish to each other. And another one of my friends says i should just leave him alone. But 6 people think he likes me. And so i was upset about it and i went out of the locker room to get some fresh air and my 2 friends came with me and i was getting kind of teary and the guy i like's best friend saw and then called my two friends over and told them to tell me that the guy i like doesnt like me and that he's told all his friends he doesn't like me and the people telling me he likes me are twisting his words. So at this point i honestly have no clue what to do. I don't know who to trust and i'm really confused. Because what he does is stare at me and then goes and talks about me behind my back. I don't know. What should I do? And please don't say to ask him myself because I don't want to push it. And i don't want to ask him because I'm really shy. Advice?
