Are they real?
We've all probably seen those big novelty looking checks but my question is are they really or do they have to be rewritten on a normal size check?

The big ones are for the cameras. They usually issue a regular one that can be cashed.
If the big one has all the pertinent info in theory it can be cashed but usually isn't.

I have had novelty big cheques made for charity events and generally they are for show only and the money is actually handed over in the form of a normal cheque.

Yes they are, providing they have the details required of the bank on it then you can take it to a bank and pay it in. If you wanted you could write a cheque out on a napkin, though duplicating the bar codes might be a bit tricky.
