What's the cost of public transport in Sydney?

I'm moving to Sydney in a couple of months and I'm already budget planning because I'm so excited. I'm just wondering approximately how much a 20-40 minute bus ride would typically cost? And what are the train fares like?

The main areas I'll be travelling to and from (all via public transport) are Alexandria, Sydney CBD and Bondi.

Thanks!

Update:

By "20-40 minute bus ride", I mean the journey in total would be about 20-40 minutes, but could include two, three or even four buses in total. So individually/in total about how much are the bus trips around the areas I asked about? :)

The cheapest tickets for trains are quarterly tickets then weekly tickets. There are substantial savings to be made there. If you buy a return train ticket before 9am, it costs the full fare. After 9am it is half the full fare plus 10c.

If you are travelling on both buses and trains, you need a MyMulti ticket, details here

As you can see, the longer the period you buy the ticket to cover, the cheaper the ticket becomes. A daily ticket is $23, a weekly $46 (for one zone) - a week's travel for the cost of two days. Even a three zone weekly is cheaper than three day tickets.

The CBD shuttle bus is free it runs every 10 minutes.. it operates in both directions on a loop from Central Station to Circular Quay via George Street.

I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure Australia has a free bus service. Whether this applies to all buses or a certain chain, I can't say, but they definitely do have free buses.

As for train fares, I have no idea.
