About NDEs: Are there studies that have been done regarding whether there the brain can have experiences when?

when there is no blood flowing through the brain? When a person has a cardiac arrest, no blood can flow through the brain and therefore no oxygen can nourish the brain cells. It is when the brain cells have had no supply of oxygen for 5 to 10 minutes that irreparable damage is done to them and they die. As a consequence of that, the person dies.

Background: (does anyone read beyond the primary words?) NDEs in a study done in the Netherlands published in 2001, all of which took place during "clinical death" after a heart attack, happened while consciousness should have been impossible. ( I'm re-reading a book that this is in, "Consciousness Beyond Life" by Dr. Pim van Lommel, a cardiologist who started off as an atheist.) But recently, I thought I'd seen on YA that some new studies had been done which showed that there can be activity in the brain even when the heart is not beating.

Can anyone help me track this down? That's what I want, not just some statements such as "NDEs take place because of anoxia - loss of oxygen to the brain" because besides everyone always saying that, lack of oxygen to the brain produces confusion, fuzzy thinking, torpor, and cessation of thought—the longer the brain cells are starved of oxygen. Nor do I want the usual "NDEs take place because of chemicals in the dying brain"—I need to know how the brain can register anything, including produce memories, when the heart has stopped. Thanks!

First of all, just because a person has a heart attack doesn't mean that there isn't still some oxygen getting to the brain. So there could still be brain activity shortly after someone goes into cardiac arrest. There's not really a way to know if people can have NDE's while the brain is inactive, because we can only measure brain activity.

I believe that NDE's are a result of a drug called DMT that is released at the time of death. Look up DMT: The Spirit Molecule on Netflix. It explains the light, the out of body experiences, etc, and it is explaining the legit studies of Rick Strassman. Whether DMT supports the existence of a God or not, well, I guess that's up to you.

The brain actually lives for a few minutes without a pulse, hence the reason CPR works.

Hello wendalore, yes after death the spirit coming out would be in non material form and mostly as a field. This would influence any individual's mind and thereby imprint its likes and dislikes in the blood cells. Right from those blood cells sperm come out with those imprints and as a child is born then it would be having a powerful influence of that particular spirit. This is what we call rebirth or reincarnation. Science has to do a lot of studies on these and definitely one day all such secrets would be explained in a scientific way.

".....Van Lommel's book ignores (Nobel Prize winning) scientific knowledge including some conclusions from his own research. He does not refute neurobiological explanations, gives no scientific basis for his statements and borrows concepts from quantum physics without ground"

They call it a "Near Death Experience" for a reason. They were near death. If they died, they would be gone forever. I agree with the answer that says that explains DMT causes the out of body experiences, and the light. There is NO evidence for an afterlife, therefore, there is no afterlife.
