re-paint black alloy wheels silver?

Hi,

I'm going to view this stunning diesel coupe tomorrow after seeing it on Autotrader.co.uk. The thing that bothers me is that it appears that looking at the pictures someone has painted the silver alloys matt black. Everything else about the car looks completely standard. I've checked online for replacement alloy wheels and they topple over £500 for a set of 4.

How easy (or not so easy) would it be to return the alloys to the original shiny silver colour? Also if anyone could give any estimates as to the rough cost to get them sorted, that would be great.

Cheers :-)

Well i have seen many young guys 'paint' alloys with varying results. However, if the Black is a home paint job trying to paint over it will probably cause the black paint to start to lift or wrinkle and it is just not a good idea. The way to go is to have the wheels shot blasted and painted or powder coated. There are specialist Alloy Wheel refurbishment companies all over the place. Cost will vary according to where you live, big city prices will be higher than those in a more rural area due to their higher overheads. I live in a rural area and our local re-furbisher charges £25 per wheel [providing you take them in and collect them]. Quite what you do with a car minus wheels is another matter. I see Bear has given another of his quite unique answers.

Ignore bearface. He invents the most stupid answers when he doesn't know what he's talking about.

You don't 'paint' alloy wheels, you need to get them shotblasted, re-coated and re-lacquered. I'd worry about someone whose lack of car care knowledge makes them think that slapping a cost of paint on a set of alloys is a god idea, they've probably not looked after the rest oif the car well.

Hi the reason will become apparent when you see the wheels close up. the wheels will have corroded so the guy has painted them black to disguise the state of them. sadly this is the problem with alloy wheels the road salt over a few winters does this to the metal.

a wheel refurbishment is possible it does mean they have to be cleaned right back and redone. sometimes the metal is so badly pitted that only a new set of alloys is the answer.
