Why does virgo send me mixed signals?

I’m a Capricorn, dealing with this virgo for almost 2 yrs now. started out as friends bc he had a girlfriend and back then he was super flirty with me but I wasn’t going for it. So we stayed friends but kept it at a distance. They were together for 5 years but they broke up. He used to tell me that he’s not the committed type&that girls are his weakness. So first red flag.

When he became single, he and I got closer, started getting intimate, &spending the night with each other. But then we’ll go days w/o speaking to each other. He also told me he likes me. And I told him I like him back. But there’s times when he’ll post pictures up of him dancing with this one particular girl in the club. He’s like…in love with her and he’s known her since high school (I did my research). We’re graduated from college by the way.

I don’t call him or initiate anything bc I don’t want to face rejection. When he calls me , he points out the fact that if it weren't for him calling me, we wouldn’t talk at all. Which is true, but it’s bc I don’t want to play myself. I don’t understand how someone can say they like u but do the complete opposite. I feel like every time that I do show him my affection or reach out to him, he ignores me or takes really long to get back to me. So I just shut down altogether.

Idk how to handle him, we haven't established what we really are so I don't wanna make it uncomfortable by bringing it up. What to do?!
